What is that ingredient in a shampoo that softens hair?

what chemical that can soften hairWhat is that ingredient in a shampoo that softens hair?
fat. What is that ingredient in a shampoo that softens hair?
Don't know. But I would have thought it's the Oils in the shampoo that make it soft.
It just depends. It's not really a chemical. Some lines use avocado oils and so forth.

  • What if shampoo has no wateras its ingredient??

what will happen if we only use the other ingredients w/o any water..What if shampoo has no wateras its ingredient??
it just wouldnt work. Everything like that contains water. Im not sure what it would be like though. Hm...What if shampoo has no wateras its ingredient??
If it does not contain a natural ingrediant like water then it is not helping your hair . It is just a mixture of chemical junk in a bottle.

Are expensive shampoos and soaps with exotic ingredients pointless?

Is there really any reason to purchase expensive shampoos or soaps the contain a long list of exotic natural ingredients when you just end up washing it all down the drain two minutes later? How can a minute amount of silk amino acids or sandalwood extract have any effect on your hair or hands if you rinse it out 30 seconds later? I see the point of such ingredients in products that stay on your skin or in your hair a little longer (e.g. lotions or conditioners), but is there really any reason to put it in soap? Are expensive shampoos and soaps with exotic ingredients pointless?
Oh, I has been go through same thing. I get worry of chemicals in it which, I might not know about. So, I went to Vitatim Shopper (health store) and found this plenty simple natural few ingredients that you can read in only 1 or 4 words! work lots better than other types. I bought Jojoba shampoo and conditioner work well for me and at good price. They have aloe Vera, Jojoba, mango, and whatever. I suggestion you go there check it out! Might save your money. *smile* ((Good Luck!))Are expensive shampoos and soaps with exotic ingredients pointless?
I think regular shampoo is just as good or better.
It depends on what ingriedients are in the shampoo bottle.
The better shampoos have balanced PH levels which keep the hair from drying out and getting damaged. This info is from my hairdresser at Vidal Sassoon. I use Paul Mitchell because the scents are mild.

What is the ingredient '; Green 5 '; that I found in my shampoo?

I bought REDKEN shampoo and conditioner, and the conditioner the last ingredient on the list was ';Green 5';. Personally I have NO clue what that is, never heard of it. Honestly, it sounds kinda scary. If you have any insight on this, please inform me... thank you! What is the ingredient '; Green 5 '; that I found in my shampoo?

    It is a coloring ingredient.
It's dye. It's simply color, like blue 3 and red 5. Nothing bad. It just gives it it's color.

Sodium laureth sulfate-worst ingredient in shampoo?

i was researching about having my haircolor last longer bc my haircolor would fade sooooo fast (after 2 or 3 washes) then i found out that this ingredient strips your haircolor dramatically. Even my stylist said so. Garnier frcutis color shield has this ingredient, which is bs, now i use loreal everpure system. I was wondering if this affects anybody else?Sodium laureth sulfate-worst ingredient in shampoo?
It is the suddsing agent it is in body washes and bubble bath products. Don't believe the hype, just use a moisturizing shampoo.

Sulphate free shampoo (SLS Free).. seems to be the big thing.. Is SLS really a bad ingredient in a shampoo?

I would like to find a brand of shampoo that is sulphate free ... can anyone recommend some?.. Once again though.. is this really bad for your hair.. or just some rumor started from the salons..? thanksSulphate free shampoo (SLS Free).. seems to be the big thing.. Burts Bee's has a good shampoo line. Actually I like all of their products. Their stuff is usually mostly or all natural. It is said that sodium laurel/laureth sulfate dries hair and skin out, strips it of lipids among other things.

  • What ingredients should i stay away from in shampoo ??

Cos i've read so many different things. My hair is quite sensitive to the harsh chemicals, i've had to stop using Pantene cos it was making my hair fall out! and apaz thats one of the worst.

Has Dove got any ingredients in that will make my hair dry and fall out ?? Cos it's got Sodium Laureth Sulphate in it and people say thats good and some say thats bad :S Doe's it depend on the Dove shampoo cos theres loads out!

But what ingredients should i look out for anyways ??

Thanks XoWhat ingredients should i stay away from in shampoo ??
Use aloe vera. What ingredients should i stay away from in shampoo ??
Go to the health food store and look at what they have.. one good one is a line called KISS MY FACE....soaps, lotions and such... try that.
well i use this coconut milk shampoo from Organix and its amazing! the ingrediants are all organic, u can get it @ target
Stay away from anything called shampoo. There is alot of natural products you can use in your hair.
avoid products that have two different types of alcohol in them..it doesn't matter what types because every shampoo has alcohol in it to clean your hair. having two seperate types dries your hair out like crazy. dove works well for me, so does garnier fructis and loreal vive

Which shampoos are bad for your hair and what ingredients to look out for that are bad for hair?

Can anyone reccomend me a good shampoo that will not damage my hair or cause hair loss and will just clean my hair. My hair is thinning and i need a shampoo that does not have any harmful ingredients. I heard Pantene, head and Shoulders and Neutrogena are all bad for hair.Which shampoos are bad for your hair and what ingredients to look out for that are bad for hair?
the two worst chemicals for your hair are ammonium laurel sulfate and ammonium laureth sulfate, both which are cleaning agents. you should try to stick with sodium laurel sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, tea laurel sulfate, and tea laureth sulfate (for cleaning agents). Pantene is bad for your hair, it might make it all nice and shiny, but that's because it coats the hair w/wax, but the ingredients in it are bad for you hair (shampoo at least).

Garnier is pretty good if you want something not too expensive.Which shampoos are bad for your hair and what ingredients to look out for that are bad for hair?
yes, i have heard those to, why don't you ask your beautician what they recommend for your hair type. odds are they will have a good answer
there are a lot of shampoos and conditioners bad for your hair.

i stay away from anything 2 in 1, pert, head and shoulders, pantine, i like some suave but only the professionals collection, i also like dove products, biloage, garnar frutice, aussie.
Stay away from shampoos that contain sulfates. They will say sodium lauryl sufate or sodium laureth sufate. They can be irritating to those with sensitive skin. The only purpose is to make the shampoo foam but foam has nothing to do with getting the hair clean.
pantene is not bad. try usuing aussie or ganier frtist longa nd strong. its very nice
pantene is absolutely horrible for your hair, we actually use it in the salon i work at to strip out color from peoples hair. if you pay the extra money for better hair products youll see the results. try bumble and bumble or paul mitchell

    Natural Ingredients Shampoos?

Everywhere I go, every shampoo I check, they all include Sodium/Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, or something even worse than that.

Does anyone know what shampoo I can buy that doesnt include these harsh ingredients, and where can I buy them?Natural Ingredients Shampoos?
    A shampoo and cond. called';J.A.S.O.N.';

Do a search on yahoo, and yes include the periods.

You can also buy it from ';Vitamin Shoppe'; stores, and online.

    It's not expensive either.

    GLNatural Ingredients Shampoos?
Just go to the Whole foods store they have a large selection of natural beauty products.
I had this problem for years because I relax my hair and I had tried at least 15 shampoos all claiming they'd moisturize my hair when they only dried my hair out because of the sulfates. My hair life turned around after I started watching a show called Blowout 2 years ago, which was about a stylist named Jonathan Antin who's really passionate about hair. Long story short by the end of the season he developed his own line of products which saved my hair.

I use his Add Moisture shampoo, but he has two other types and they are all sulfate free. It's the only shampoo I've used in the last two years because it doesn't dry out my hair and my first bottle lasted for about a year because you don't have to use a lot. I've also started using a conditioner by a company named Ojon, I haven't tried their shampoo yet, which I think contains magnesium laureth sulfate but the condtioners that they make really work so I assume that the shampoos probably will as well.

Jonathan shampoos are like 18 bucks a bottle which you can learn more about at jonathanproduct.com, and I think Ojon's might be around $20 their website is ojonhaircare.com.

Both lines are sold at sephora.com and qvc.com, they're bestsellers.
I know what you mean...I have been on a quest to go all natural. I use Carol's Daughter. Her products are paraben free and I find are good for me. Also, you might want to check out that or even the other site. That will list companies that don't used chemically altered products. You could also make your own products. At Long Hair Care Forum, for $5.00 for a year membership, it has different recipes that people use in creating natural shampoos and conditioners. Try those out. Good luck.

Why do they use natural products in detergents & shampoos yet artficial ingredients in food?

I only have a theory. No matter what designer name or price point the hair care items have on them, they are ALL THE SAME and provide exactly the same function. I don't care if it's 99 cents or 99 dollars, it does the same thing. In order to make the consumer, who knows this, purchase a particular brand over another one, they have to advertise certain things that make it appear different, such as ';all natural,'; or ';fruit extracts,'; or ';milk and honey,'; etc. You won't get any difference in the results, I don't care what anyone says. Not only that, but if you search the 'net for homemade hair treatments, you can buy the cheap shampoos and do your own deep treatments and everyone will be asking who does your hair. It's all a ripoff. Why do they use natural products in detergents %26amp; shampoos yet artficial ingredients in food?
You got ME! Good question. Why do they use natural products in detergents %26amp; shampoos yet artficial ingredients in food?
They also add antibiotics etc.Its to keep the food lasting longer %26amp; we never know what were eating or whats in it.I believe they should tell us %26amp; let us chose.i also do not understand why we import cooked chicken from Thailand to go into ready prepared meals. We now have another bug worse one in the country its called EBL ecoli %26amp; we are getting it from the muck they import watched Trevor McDonald 30,000

new cases each year %26amp; 10% die they have kept that quiet.Yet its on the net.
It's usually a sales gimmick as regards shampoos etc. They're still full of colourants and chemicals (if you check the label carefully).
Sorry, but most detergents and shampoos DO NOT use natural products. They may claim to be using natural ingredients, but the bulk of the ingredients are chemicals. Most shampoos use sodium laureth sulfate (SLS) as a cleansing agent, which does more than cleanse. It literally strips your hair of its natural oils. SLS is too harsh to be used on hair and skin. Also, shampoos are generally filled with preservatives such as parabens, which have been linked to cancer. They also contain other potentially dangerous ingredients like propylene glycol. So the ingredients in detergents and shampoos are no better than the ingredients in your instant pancake mix. I suggest sticking to whole, natural foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, fresh raw milk and cheese, etc. instead of opting for processed foods such as t.v. dinners, potato chips, soda, and other items that have a long shelf life.

    Shampoo Ingredients?

There's a new volumizing shampoo on the market (I can't remember the brand name) and in the ad, they mention some of the ingredients as being beneficial. Would someone like to explain to me how glucose and fructose (which to me says sugar and fruit sugar) beneficial to your hair?Shampoo Ingredients?
Fructose from fruit (also reffered to as Fruit Acids, adds moisture

I think this is the shampoo you might have seen advertised

Garnier Fructis fortifying shampoo is perfect for dry or damaged hair. It contains active fruit concentrate to give strength and shine to your hair. These concentrates, which are naturally present in fruit include Fruit acids, vitamins B3, B6, Fructose, and Glucose.

In Brushing/Combing tests, compared to ordinary shampoo Garnier Fructis products make hair 5 times stronger and up to 5 times smooher.

    Here are the ingredients:

Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betain, Cocamide MIPA, Distearyl Ether, Sodium Chloride, Behenyl Alcohol, Laureth 2, PPG-5 Ceteth-20, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Fragrance, Sodium Methylparaben, Carbomer, DMDM Hydantoin, Niacinamide, Pyridoxine HCl, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Citric Acid, Saccharum Officinarum (Sugar Cane) Extract, Citrus Medica Limonum

(Lemon) Peel Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract F.I.L. D3985/2

Sodium laurel sulfate is a severe caustic chemical that can damage the hair, and lead to many other skin disorders. There is nothing magic about this shampoo except for clever advertising. You will get much better and safer results with a natural non-synthetic volumizing shampoo from the health food store.

When taking a shower, it is doubtful the thought, ';How is this shampoo affecting my nerves ?'; ever comes to mind. Though perhaps more people should pay attention to the products they are using on a daily basis, as some contain a potentially dangerous chemical, methylisothiazolinone (MIT), which may have detrimental effects on the nervous system.

While the purpose of MIT is to prevent bacteria from developing, researchers found that contact with it restricted growth of axons and dendrites of immature nerves found in rat brain cells. The rat studies also showed that chronic exposure to this chemical led to a malfunction in the way neurons communicate with one another. One researcher explained that direct exposure to high concentrations of MIT would irritate the skin because it can damage skin cells. Yet since the chemical only affects the cells it comes in contact with, there is no way the chemical can get into the bloodstream and go to the brain.

Based on their findings, researchers concluded that people working directly with MIT are the most at risk; however, additional tests still must be administered in order to determine if MIT is harmful to humans in the concentrations found in household products.

http://www.peaceful-organic-planet.com/o鈥?/a>Is there a recipe to make natural cleansing shampoo with ingredients from home?
Yes.Is there a recipe to make natural cleansing shampoo with ingredients from home?
there should be i hav a hole book full!

Why are thickeners an important ingredient in shampoo?

ie: what does it do for the hair??

Why are ingredients in shampoos so dang hard to say?

So you won't know what the hell they're talking about and you can't sue them if anything goes wrong. :)Why are ingredients in shampoos so dang hard to say?
You mean like ';methylchloroisothiazolinone';? Maybe it is to make us all feel dumb, so we will trust the makers of these products to figure out this complicated science for us, and continue to buy from them. And not do something silly like try to make our own shampoo. (who could with crap like that in there?) lol.Why are ingredients in shampoos so dang hard to say?
because most of the time, the chemical words that they put on a shampoo bottles ingredient list is the ';root'; word, of that particular chemical.
because scary chemicals are hard to pronounce. some ingredient lists will translate the chemical names into regular names. some don't want you to know.

Is it so horrible to wash my hair with a shampoo and conditioner with these ingredients? PLEASE ANSWER?

I use Aussie Sun-touched Shine shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo has good ingredients, except for Sodium Laureth Sulfate (which I hear dries out hair). The conditioner is good too except for fragrance (which I hear is a harmful combination of chemicals). My hair is fairly straight and not too oily or dry, just inbetween. I do use a leave-in conditioner sometimes, a deep conditioner once weekly. So, is it really so horrible to wash my hair three times a week with these products? Thanks! Is it so horrible to wash my hair with a shampoo and conditioner with these ingredients? PLEASE ANSWER?
All cleaning agents will dry out your hair to some extent. As for fragrance I personally don't see the harm. Your hair is not alive and soaking up trace amounts of something harmful won't hurt you.

The blunt truth is that there is only so much you can do that will affect the condition of your hair once it has already sprouted out of your head.

But I do wonder why you are asking this question?

Ohhhh... are you concerned about the environment? Well there is that argument but I don't believe there is a product line out there that will do less harm ... those without the chemicals that are deemed harmful don't work as well so you end up washing things more often ... wasting power and water not to mention your time cleaning things over and over. Most of the time when a product make claims about being environmentally friendly it is only a marketing ploy and ends up being worse. Is it so horrible to wash my hair with a shampoo and conditioner with these ingredients? PLEASE ANSWER?
I did use that line once, it didn't make much of a difference, but I did find my hair being a little more dry... if you deep condition (not with the same conditioner tho), you'll be fine.
i dun think u should use that shampoo if it has sodium laureth sulfate in it...

What ingredient/s make shampoo and mouthwash acidic?

there's one for each... I just don't know what they are... I'm looking for answers in the form of ';citric acid'; or ';NaOH';..What ingredient/s make shampoo and mouthwash acidic?
anything with ';acid'; in the ingredients list. If you don't have a bottle then perhaps you should buy one.

NaOH is sodium hydroxide: opposite of acid.

Citric acid is common in both shampoo and mouthwash: also look for acetic and phosphoric acid. What ingredient/s make shampoo and mouthwash acidic?
    How shampoo works

Shampoo cleans by stripping sebum from the hair. Sebum is an oil secreted by hair follicles that is readily absorbed by the strands of hair, and forms a protective layer. Sebum protects the protein structure of hair from damage, but this protection comes at a cost. It tends to collect dirt, styling products and scalp flakes. Surfactants strip the sebum from the hair shafts and thereby remove the dirt attached to it.

While both soaps and shampoos contain surfactants, soap bonds to oils with such affinity that it removes too much if used on hair. Shampoo uses a different class of surfactants balanced to avoid removing too much oil from the hair.

The chemical mechanisms that underlie hair cleansing are similar to that of traditional soap. Undamaged hair has a hydrophobic surface to which skin lipids such as sebum stick, but water is initially repelled. The lipids do not come off easily when the hair is rinsed with plain water. The anionic surfactants substantially reduce the interfacial surface tension and allow for the removal of the sebum from the hair shaft. The non-polar oily materials on the hair shaft are solubilised into the surfactant micelle structures of the shampoo and are removed during rinsing. There is also considerable removal through a surfactant and oil ';roll up'; effect. The foamy effect achieved by massaging shampoo into the hair is purely aesthetic.

    MOUTHWASH

Mouthwash or mouth rinse is a product used for oral hygiene. Antiseptic and anti-plaque mouth rinse claims to kill the bacterial plaque that causes caries, gingivitis, and bad breath. Anti-cavity mouth rinse uses fluoride to protect against tooth decay. However, it is generally agreed that the use of mouthwash does not eliminate the need for both brushing and flossing. In the absence of a ready-made mouthwash, gargling with plain water is preferable, to remove food particles, sugars and other pollutants in the mouth

    Composition

Active ingredients in commercial brands of mouthwash can include thymol, eucalyptol, hexetidine, methyl salicylate, menthol, chlorhexidine gluconate, benzalkonium chloride, cetylpyridinium chloride, methylparaben, hydrogen peroxide, domiphen bromide and sometimes fluoride, enzymes and calcium. Ingredients also include water, sweeteners such as sorbitol, Sucralose, sodium saccharine, and xylitol (which doubles as a bacterial inhibitor).

Sometimes a significant amount of alcohol (up to around 20%) is added, as a carrier for the flavor, to provide ';bite'; and to contribute an antibacterial effect. Because of the alcohol content, it is possible to fail a breathalyzer test after rinsing; in addition, alcohol is a drying agent and may worsen chronic bad breath. As such, it is possible for alcoholics to abuse mouthwash. Recently, some assumptions were made of a possible carcinogenic character of alcohol used in mouthrinses, but no clear evidence was found. Commercial mouthwashes usually contain a preservative such as sodium benzoate to preserve freshness once the container has been opened. Many newer brands are alcohol-free and contain odor-elimination agents such as oxidizers, as well as odor-preventing agents such as zinc ion technology to keep future bad breath from developing[citation needed].

A salt mouthwash is a home treatment for mouth infections and/or injuries, or post extraction, and is made by dissolving a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water. Plain (diluted) hydrogen peroxide is another common mouthwash.

One thing to note is that many commercial mouthwashes are very acidic on the pH scale. If you have heartburn, acid reflux or acid indigestion, it is important to use a mouthwash with a neutral pH to avoid irritation.

  • Do most shampoos/conditioners have round about the same ingredients?

I have heard that all shampoos and conditioners mostly have the same ingredients and that buying expensive products are a waste of time? I know the hair products may differ from brand to brand but how much really? Am I just wasting my money? I used to use Elvive (which is kinda pricey) and now I am trying out Alberto Balsam 鈥?cheaper but apparently the ingredients are more natural 鈥?I actually find that my hair is softer and smells great with the cheaper version!?Do most shampoos/conditioners have round about the same ingredients?
    not really

expensive ones have better ingredients and most of them are sulfate-free which helps keep color treated hair last way longer than inexpensive shampoos and conditioners

i would definitely by salon products, they are definitely worth it and work a lot better

also some inexpensive ones have a wax product in them which coats the strands of your hair making it feel softer... not really a great thing for your hair, pantene has wax in their products

What if shampoo has no water as its ingredient?

What if theres no water in the shampoos that we are using.. only the other ingredients!!What if shampoo has no water as its ingredient?
As far as I know, all shampoos have water in them. It's what keeps it fluid. If you get curious, check the ingredients on the label. It will be listed there. What if shampoo has no water as its ingredient?
    Wtf...
There are many shampoos out there that do just that. They have no water in the ingredients. They are mostly professional brands and they are very highly concentrated! A very little bit goes a long way! It is a little hard for some people to get used to using these products as they are accustomed to pouring out a handful of shampoo and rubbing it on their head. It's a tough thing to get used to using only the size of a dime or nickle (for longer hair). The trick to using them is to not ring the water out of your hair before applying shampoo. The water in your hair will help in the distribution of the product rather then the water already being present in the shampoo itself. They are out there and well worth the price as they will last so much longer if used properly.

Thank you for the 10 point's! Report Abuse

I use Head %26amp; Shoulders and my hair looks great
The Body Shop and Lush both promise all natural ingredients. If you wash your hair every day - it is better for your hair if you Dont condition it every day as that can reduce your natural oils.

Sometimes the natural ingredient ones cost a little more than the everyday shampoos and conditioners but is better in the long run, and also I prefer to know that what I am using is not tested on animals.

I'm sure you'll find plenty to suit your type of hair - good luck to you.
You can go into a health store and check out what they have to offer
Aveda Shampoos and Conditioners are very natural

and good for your hair...There a lil bit on the more expensive side...however, I believe paying a lil extra for this product is worth it!

The only downfall is that they dont really have a lot of pretty scented shampoos %26amp; conditioners becuase they don't use chemicals to alter the smell, but there are a few differnet types to choose from...

They also have a skin care line,make-up, perfume and styling products for your hair

    good luck :)

well, i take BIG care of my hair cause i luv my hair! well, i use the aussie clense and mense or something like that... and i'm gona start using organic shampoos and conditioners. like you can get them at organic grocery stores. ya! and like wash ur hair in cold water ! it's gives you more shine after blow drying or like tower drying...
Hi the products from Lush are made from natural ingrediants. I wanted to go on to the natural products and I have ordered Lush hair care products a few times, the thing is some a better than others, you dont tend tp get what you do out of normal shampoos and conditoners, and there isnt that many of them.

Rehab Shampoo is a liquid shampoo they are around 拢4 for a little bottle rehad lathers up well and is for dry damaged hair.

There is cyntiha sylvia stout that smells like laget as it made with actuall stout. I found with this there isnt much later and you need to use loads.

all the shampoos are the same price, then there are the shampoo bars these are the best thing from Lush as you get loads of lather with them and they last ages.

I have tried godiva a 2 in 1 doesnt make hair really soft but does give it loads of shine, not nice if you dont like the smell of Jasmine. Then there is untimate shine and a few others.

The conditioners are coolaoulin junlge and american cream and retread, retread is the best and all the others dont really work for me, American cream is the best sent ever.

there is also hair moisturisers that you put on dry hair.

The Lush site isnt running at the moment as the new forum and site is getting redone. But before you buy I would register with the forum and look on the product reviews and opinions. I find on with Lush products noone experiances the same. some people say cynthia sylvia stout shampoo is the best, and for me it was no good, same the conditoners people say they are excellent and I find they dont do anything for me.

The also sell soaps and other bits and bobs, there quite odd but really easy to get hooked on. Thier products are more expensive as they are off natural ingredriant, But be careful as not every natural ingrediant suits the skin, quite a few people and even my self has had a few reations to certain things, like I didnt know I was allergic to lavander until I started to use Lush products that have lavender in the ingrediant and everything that had lavander in from Lush brought me out in a rash as its all natural.

I would say try it out and see what you think.

If you have a herbal shop or a place that sells homeopathic stuff you will find different brandes that are all natural

avoid products that have two different types of alcohol in them..it doesn't matter what types because every shampoo has alcohol in it to clean your hair. having two seperate types dries your hair out like crazy. dove works well for me, so does garnier fructis and loreal vive

It's a well known myth that circulated via an email a few years ago. The American Cancer Society has a page about Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

    and this rumor:

    '; Debunking the Myth

    Debunking the Myth

    Article date: 1998/09/23

Radical chain e-mails have been flying through cyberspace stating Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or SLS, a common ingredient in many health and beauty aids, is known to cause cancer. This is not true, according to researchers.

The following are excerpt from many of the e-mails and facts that debunk this myth.

    E-mail: ';Sodium Laryl Sulfate or SLS is commonly found in most shampoos and toothpastes.';

Fact: SLS is found in many shampoos, bath products and according to a study published in May 1997 in Journal of Clinical Periodontology, SLS is used in toothpastes and mouth rinses as an emulsifying and surface cleansing agent.

    E-mail: ';Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) is proven to cause cancer in the long run.';

Fact: This chemical and its other compounds are known irritants, not known carcinogens.

    E-mail: ';Check the ingredients in your shampoo and see if the have the substance by the name of Sodium Laureth Sulfate or simply SLS.';

Fact: The correct abbreviation for Sodium Laureth Sulfate is ';SLES.'; Another compound, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, is abbreviated ';SLS.'; The two substances have the same general formula but differ in chemical properties.

    E-mail: ';The fact is SLS is used to scrub garage floors.';

Fact: SLS is a powerful surfactant (wetting agent) and detergent. It has industrial uses because it is a detergent which exerts emulsifying action, thereby removing oil and soil.

    E-mail: ';I called the company and told them their product contains a substance that will cause people to have cancer, and they say they know it but there is nothing they can do about it. They need that product to produce foam.';

Fact: No manufacturer would freely admit it knowingly uses a carcinogen in its products ';because we need that substance to produce foam';.

    E-mail: ';Research has shown that in the 1980's, the chance of getting cancer is one out of 8000 and now in the 1990's, the chances of getting cancer is one in three.';

Fact: According to the ACS's Cancer Facts and Figures, 1998, the occurrence of cancer increases as individuals age, and most cases affect adults middle-aged and older. Lifetime risk refers to the probability that an individual, over the course of their lifetime, will develop cancer or die from it. Currently in the US, men have a one in two lifetime risk of developing cancer, and for women the risk is one in three. During the early 1980's, the lifetime cancer risk for both men and women was one in three. This means men are slightly more at risk for cancer now, than they were then.

    E-mail: ';I hope we can stop giving ourselves the cancer virus.';

Fact: Cancer is not a virus. There are some viruses that increase a person's risk of getting cancer, but cancer itself is not viral and not contagious. Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells.

    There is no way of knowing where this Internet information comes from. However, there are a variety of websites offering health and beauty products that are SLS-free. According to David Emery and his Urban Legends website, ';Interestingly, all these Websites are maintained by 'independent distributors' for various multi-level marketing companies hawking natural personal care products. As a matter of fact, the majority of URLs returned in a standard Web search on the keywords 'sodium laureth sulfate' all point to versions of the same propaganda.';

    It is best to be cautious when obtaining information, especially health-related information, from the Web. Check to see who owns the site, make sure reliable sources are used and if ever in doubt, check it out.';

Not only that but the anti-perspirant deodorant is one of the major cause of Breat Cancer
Better to die at 70 from cancer than to die at 40 from loneliness due to the fact that everybody finds your breath and general stench repulsive.
Every manmade chemical is liable to cause cancer with enough exposure.
Saliva causes stomach cancer but only when taken in small doses over a long period of time.
Urban legend. Probably confusing it with sodium lauryl sulfate.

The poor doctor has fallen victim to rumors and folklore, or being staying up too late! Almost a decade ago, there was a circulating rumor stating that sod. laureth (or lauryl) sulfate causes cancer. There is absolutely NO scientific evidence that it does. Health Canada and the American Cancer Society, among others, have stated so. Anyway, the amount of SLS in toothpaste is pretty small.
you are going to have a hard time finding products that get foamy without sodium laureth sulphate in them...it is what makes them foamy.

PLEASE ANSWER?
i dun think u should use that shampoo if it has sodium laureth sulfate in it...Is it so horrible to wash my hair with a shampoo and conditioner with these ingredients? PLEASE ANSWER?
I did use that line once, it didn't make much of a difference, but I did find my hair being a little more dry... if you deep condition (not with the same conditioner tho), you'll be fine.

So, is the ingredient in shampoo that makes hair healthier the one that stings?

lame question- i know. but i was sitting in the bathroom today, looking at my kids' tear-free shampoo and started thinking, ';why the heck does mine have to sting?'; can't they make a sting free adult shampoo? or would it not be as healthy for your hair? i have 4 young kids by the way- sometimes sitting in the bathroom is the only break i get:)So, is the ingredient in shampoo that makes hair healthier the one that stings?
Yeah, baby shampoo isn't good for adult hair. It's not an ingredient, per se, it's the pH balance. Baby shampoo has the same pH balance as a human eyeball - that's why it doesn't sting.

I play games on my cell phone in the bathroom, LOL.So, is the ingredient in shampoo that makes hair healthier the one that stings?
snotto is close, it's the PH, and it's the alcohol, that makes it sting.
    lmao

they should make it for adults %26amp; others

come on, i cry more than babies!!

Do products really have the ingredients they claim to have. E.g. ';henna/almond/lemon'; shampoo ??

I have always wondered about this and would love to know whether we can really believe labels. Is there any public institution responsible for checking the labelling of products and whether the labels are fact or fiction?Do products really have the ingredients they claim to have. E.g. ';henna/almond/lemon'; shampoo ??
I believe they have the abstract like the residue of the ingredients they suppose to have like some sodas that say strawberry don't have strawberries.Do products really have the ingredients they claim to have. E.g. ';henna/almond/lemon'; shampoo ??
I'm pretty sure they're fact. I remember hearing that they list the ingredients beginning with the one with the most amount in the product, and each ingredient after that becomes successively smaller in amount.
if it is labeled in the the ingredients list it HAS to be there legally if its not you can sue the crap out of them...first one one the list is the one thats in it the most decreasing as the list goes on the last one will be the least used ingredient... someone above me also said that to...
if it is in the ingredients list, it should be real.

but if it is in the title or description of the product, that is no promise.

More natural the better- this is what I go by and it helps:

avoid lauryl sulfates (its an extremely wearing on your hair), and pretty much anything that you cant understand. A good indicator of a good shampoo is with hydrolyzed ingredients, like Burt's bees (10$). There's also more affordable natural products at walmart cant remember the name but itll run you 5$ a piece (not bad).

The more natural ones wont feel as good initially, but throughout the day I notice less buildup and smoother hair. It only doesnt feel as smooth in the shower because it doesnt have all the dimethicone and crap in it.

But conditioner wise- stick to a regular one thats rich in conditioning agents

Try the one at walmart, its called like natural something in a white bottle, or Burt's bees Raspberry %26amp; Brazil nut.

ps/. avoiding dimethicones and all that also prevents buildup on your back, in extreme cases back acne, if that is ever an issue...
look at labels and avoid alcohol, you will be surprised how many of the conditioners have alcohol in them

herbal essences has some new moisturizing ones in blue bottles with green caps, they work very well

What is the ingredient in shampoo that balances its pH?

pH is adjusted with citric or phosphoric acid to lower and sodium hydroxide to raise. Ideal pH 5.5 to 6.5

What are the harmful ingredients I should avoid in shampoos?

Recently, I've been skeptical in choosing shampoos because I'm growing my hair. And I want it to be as soft and smooth as possible. I've noticed that the effects of the shampoo I'm using only last a few hours and starts to get oily and frizzy again.

I've done research and found out that some shampoos have harsh ingredients that damages hair when used everyday. What are the harmful ingredients I should avoid in shampoos?
What You Don't Know Might Harm You

Usually shampoo ingredients contain at least 10-20 types of synthetic or manmade chemicals with names that most people cannot even pronounce. If you go to your local store and search for any branded shampoos, you probably won't notice the fine prints of these ingredients but just what the general indication of the shampoo like hair type and style.

Researchers and scientists have found prove that some shampoo ingredients or chemicals can unintentionally trigger potential health threats and even carry carcinogenic properties (Cancer Causing Agents).

Although there is no way to ascertain whether a product can be contaminated to cause chemical induced hair loss diseases or other health problems, I do recommend that you, if you are suffering from hair loss, to avoid it if possible.

It's time to take a deeper look on how some of these shampoo ingredients.

    --------------------------------------鈥?br>

    Sodium Laureth Sulfate

Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) is one of the most common shampoo ingredients. In fact most personal hygiene products contain this specific ingredient. SLES is a washing surfactant, in other words a washing detergent. Imagine it as a car polish that returns the shine by removing the top layer of the paint.

There is another similar type known as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), which is more potent while SLES is more powerful foaming agent. This synthetic formula is widely used for washing and removing stains and can irritate your eyes upon contact.

Although recently, there have been rumors stating SLES is can cause potential health risks and carcinogen, toxicology research by the agencies like OSHA, NTP, and IARC have found that this statement has over exaggerated.

One of the concern is that they have found in some shampoo products that contain this basic ingredient, to have a small percentage of parts-per-thousand to parts-per-million levels of 1,4-Dioxane via manufacturing contamination.

Now 1,4 Diaoxane has been proven by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to be a very potential carcinogen and can cause damage to your central nervous system, liver and kidneys.

    --------------------------------------鈥?br>

    DEA and TEA

One of the funny ingredient names to look out for is Diethanolamine (DEA)or Triethonalamine (TEA). Well in case you don't know (TEA) is not a kind of tea extract but both of these chemicals are wetting agents, that help the shampoo create a richer lather.

These ingredients can react with nitrites found in some shampoo ingredients. Manufacturers use nitrite as a preservative and a reaction between these chemicals can form a cancer causing compound known as Nitrosamines. (Confusing huh?)

If your shampoo contains an ingredient known as Bronopol, the risk of reaction is elevated. So it's best to avoid these TEA and DEA ingredients.

    --------------------------------------鈥?br>

    Hair Dyes

Some of your hair Dyes contain lead acetate, a type of heavy metal that can absorbed through your skin and cause

    Nervous system problems

    Embryo defects

    Irritation

    Redness

Long term exposure can lead to

    Poisoning

    Restlessness

    Irritability

    Visual Disturbances

    Hypertension

Well, I don't think it's dangerous to dye your hair once a while, but think twice before you decide use hair dyes regularly.

    --------------------------------------鈥?br>

    Coloring Agents

How do shampoo obtain that lovely smell and color after mixing with so much chemicals? Colorings of course. Colorings are common products used during to manufacturing process to turn the dully colored mixture from all those chemicals to a more enticing color. Manufacturers needed to help conceal the originally processed color of their products so that we consumers, won't freak out when we use the products.

According to David Steinman, the auther of The Safe Shopper's Bible, he suggests that some of these listed colors might cause health problems. So try not to over too many products that contain these colorings.

    Phthalates

Phthalates are platicizers than have been regarded in many countries to be potential carcinogens. Recently, Phthalates are found in perfumes in some shampoo ingredients that give the 'lovely smell'. This product has been found to cause

    birth defects

    liver cancers

    hormonal disruptions

in laboratory tests. Some products that contain Phthalates are banned in California and several countries. See this Wikipedia article on Phthalates here.

The best way to avoid Phthalates is to choose shampoo ingredients that do not contain perfumes or fragrances. If you are looking for something that smells nice, you can always opt for essential oils or herWhat are the harmful ingredients I should avoid in shampoos?
As a general rule, I try to stray away from anything over 11 characters.

However, if you're looking for a shampoo I suggest anything from Matrix.

Their products are extremely good for both looks and health. Very important if you are growing your hair.

The price is more expensive than those found in the supermarket but they last for ages and are well worth the extra cash.
Unless your shampoo is certified organic (with a logo diplaying it certification) I wouldn't use it. Even if it says it is ';Natural'; or even ';Organic'; don't use it because these days people can say whatever they want on their marketing but only Certified Organic shampoo's are safe.

I doubt you're going to find an egg based shampoo. It wouldn't make sense because the egg in it would go bad. There are some that have a bit in it, but it's not really enough to make much of a difference.

Just use an actual egg in your hair. Some people break it into a bowl, whisk it, %26amp; work it into their hair. Leave it on for 15 minutes %26amp; then rinse out.

Because the cosmetic industry is unregulated due to its strong FDA ties. You should never use ANYTHING that has an ingredient that just says 'fragrance' all the other chemicals you can look up online and see what they actually are. There is a website that goes over each cosmetic and rates its safety, I'm looking for it but cant find it, I'll add it if I do.

Switch to natural products like castile soap, olive oil soap, you can even go 'no-poo' which means no shampoo you use baking soda/vinegar instead. You should be able to recognize every ingredient in a product you are using. Your family will thank you for protecting their health!!

Hi, I would email L'oreal and ask for it. They are obligated to tell you what is in the product.

On this list of ingredients in shampoo, what is not natural?

water, decyl glucoside, lauryl glucoside, coco-glucoside, glyceryl oleate, glycine soja (soybean) protein, coco-betaine, betaine, glycerin, honey, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, triticum vulgare (wheat) protein, glucose, sucrose laurate, bertholletia excelsa (brazil nut) oil, rubus idaeus (raspberry) fruit extract, citrus aurantium bergamia (bergamot) fruit oil, citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel oil, eucalyptus globulus (eucalyptus) leaf oil, foeniculum vulgare (fennel) oil, fragaria vesca (strawberry) fruit extract, citrus reticulata (tangerine/petitgrain) leaf oil, litsea cubeba fruit oil, vanillin, artemisia pallens (davana) oil, xanthan gum, fragrance, glucose oxidase, lactoperoxidaseOn this list of ingredients in shampoo, what is not natural?
Let's see, the glucosides could be from a natural source or synthetic. Glyceryl oleate is most likely synthetic, but could be from a natural source, I'm not sure. Coco-betain and betain are synthetic; and fragrance is most likely synthetic, but could be natural since they didn't identify the specific compounds. You have some pretty sophisticated shampoo there. On this list of ingredients in shampoo, what is not natural?

  • Are their any shampoos/ingredients to prevent oily hair?

So, lately because of the warmer weather, my hair has been getting oily after a 5 hour day (I do my hair before I go to bed at night) So during school my hair gets kind of oily. I was wondering if their are any shampoos or ingredients that prevent this?? Thanks. Are their any shampoos/ingredients to prevent oily hair?
There are no shampoos to prevent the oiliness, but there are shampoos to keep it under control. Clarifying or oily hair formulas should help keep the oil at ';bay';, though. Before you shampoo, massage the scalp to loosen oil and debris, so that the shampoo can do it ';thing';, and just ';condition';the ends of your hair, NOT the whole head....this should help.EDIT: Why would anyone give a person a thumbs down when they give the poster a helpful and accurate answer...and one of the other posters here said the same thing I did...very strange. Are their any shampoos/ingredients to prevent oily hair?
You need a clarifying shampoo. But not a drugstore one, they coat your hair in wax and don;t work. Get a salon quality shampoo, it will say clarifying. And yes, you should wash all of your hair with it, not just the new growth and ends, I have no idea where they got that strange idea. But only shampoo once, rinse with cool water, and don't condition unless you have to, that will tent to make it more oily.
Use baby powder! Put a little in your hands and rub it through your hair! I use it in dance and it works like a charm! :)

Is mixing a curling shampoo with another shampoo mostly organic ingredients, a good idea?

I mix an organic shampoo for naturally curly hair with pantene. I do it because ';normal'; shampoos have too much protein for my hair so it gets brittle. A 1/2 and 1/2 dilution is good for me. Go ahead and try it, it works great for me!!!Is mixing a curling shampoo with another shampoo mostly organic ingredients, a good idea?

What is the Japanese for these shampoo ingredients: tea tree oil, sodium laureth sulfate?

I am living in Japan and running out of the shampoo I use to control my scalp dermatitis. It would cost $40 to import the particular brand I usually use, so I am hoping to find a Japanese equivalent. I need a shampoo with:

    1. tea tree oil

    2. NO sodium laureth sulfate (the main ingredient in 99% of liquid soaps and shampoos made in the USA and Canada, but I have no idea if the same is true for Japanese shampoos)

Please let me know both what these ingredients look like when written in Japanese and how to pronounce them. The pronunciation is the more important information, so that I can ask salespeople to assist me. Or, if you happen to know a brand already, let me know.

  • Shampoo ingredients for thinning hair...?

I'm 21 year old female %26amp; I've been having hair loss in mass amounts. My doctor told me to check out what ingredients i should have in my shampoo %26amp; what is not good. Can anyone shed some light on that?Shampoo ingredients for thinning hair...?
In the creation of hair thickening shampoos, there are certain ingredients frequently used, where the gentlest components are most effective in treating weakened or fine hair. Panthenol is a provitamin of B5 and is used to increase the thickness of hair shafts. Wheat protein is sometimes used to increase hair vitality, as well as elasticity. Witch hazel extract provides resiliency and adds moisture to hair. Silk proteins help to prevent brittleness by providing emolliency.Shampoo ingredients for thinning hair...?
This has NOTHING to do whats in shampoo. Shame on your doctor! What an idiot.

Have you recently had surgery or a baby?

Are you under a lot of stress?

Do you use a lot of heat (ie' hair drier set on high)?

    Are you DIABETIC?

Any of these things could cause hair loss. Personally, I have been looking at Paula Young wigs, because I have this same problem. In my case, I am insulin resistant diabetic. I had NO IDEA that my hair could thin due to this.

BUT, I have had some hair loss after each baby I had, after each surgery, and with undue stress.

Let me know what you find out, BUT, I'd have a long talk with the doctor if I were you. He sounds insensitive.

Why do the ingredients in shampoos have such long, unable to pronounce names?Shampoo Ingredients?
    dont knowShampoo Ingredients?
It sounds impressive and you won't know what it is anyway. Besides, try to pronounce the words, ha, good luck!
because they're chemicals and preservatives that we don't use on a regular basis, so they don't get an ';trade'; name... for example sodium bicarbonate is commonly known as baking soda, because people use it every day, and it's too tiring to walk around saying ';please pass me the sodium bicarbonate.'; plus it makes it sound poisonous or something
well they are chemicals really and chemicals have really long names...such as anything in the world....its like asking y does a name have its name...no one knowsz
So it makes them seem like a professional brand that is the best out there!
Because large corporations can get away with filling the bottles with toxic junk- just to make money. There are alternatives.
Scary isn't it? I can't even pronounce most of them. Best answer.....companies hiding the truth.

First of all laundry detergents are way to harsh for ones hair and so could some bar soaps. Original Source products have a vegan sign on the back. I think that may be the only one you will find in Boots. You can also buy their range in large supermarket chains, such as Tesco etc...

I doubt you're gonna find any non-animal shampoos in Boots.

Someone mentioned Original Source which are vegan however they are owned by PZ Cussons and they own Imperial Leather. IL is tested on animals so I wouldn't be surprised if Original Source is tested on animals as well.

It depends on your ethical stance whether or not you want to buy shampoo that could have been tested on animals (and even if it isn't, do you want to fund PZ Cussons so they can carry on animal testing their other products?)

You're better off finding cruelty-free and vegan shampoos by either going to health shops or buying online.

I'd like to make homemade shampoo and conditioner using natural ingredients. Help?

There are so many chemicals in the store bought products, so I was wondering how I could go about making my own. I have thin straight-wavy hair. Are there recipes I can use to make shampoo and conditioner suitable for everyday use? (Well, every other day, really...) Preferably with no animal-derived ingredients such as milk or honey. Thank you in advance. :)I'd like to make homemade shampoo and conditioner using natural ingredients. Help?
I'm not sure how you could do this, but have you considered trying Lush products? Lush makes fresh,hand-made products, that are for the most part vegan (the ones that are not have a warning label). Lush products are sold in several countries.

You should really check them out.

www.lush.comI'd like to make homemade shampoo and conditioner using natural ingredients. Help?
Any completely natural shampoo would be rancid in a very short period of time. i would do some research on the ingredients first. Many sound very chemical but are actually derived from natural sources. Regis has a new Pure line that is as natural as it can be, without going bad on the shelf.

What ingredients are good/bad in shampoo?

ok so i heard so much, like alchohol is bad to have in shampoo, but i noticed that even salon brands have alchohol.

if u can tell me what ingredients to look out for and not get those shampoos and why theyre bad, and which shampoos have/dont have them, ill give u 10 points!! thanks!!What ingredients are good/bad in shampoo?
lol its funny cause i went through this same kind of question myself.

Alchohol is not good for your hair at all, its present in shampoo to get it clean, but it dries out hair a lot! it completly strips your hair clean of its natural oils and leaves it feeling like straw, affecting look and feel.

My hair is SO sensitive, its naturally (super) curly and that means i cant use harsh shampoos on it unless i want my hair to become straw lol.

So last year, one day in chemistry, my teacher was going over acids and bases, and he said that some acids are so strong that they can easily burn through ANYTHING, well i know this may sound like it has nothing to do with shampoos, but theres this thing called pH Ballancing. All shampoos have acid in them and practically ALL of them have a very large amount too..which is NOT good for your hair at all! In order to balance out that acid, you have to use a base (acids are MORE harsher than bases) its just like cerial and milk for example, you dont want an uneven amount of both becuase it wont be good..too much cerial and its too dry and hard, too much milk and you cant see your cerial and its a big waste..right??

Since i was completly done with all of these suck *** shampoos that did nothing for my hair and just practically sucked my hair dry, i went on a scavenger hunt for any Organic Shampoos that worked. And let me tell yuh, i found it! The shampoo is called '; Burt's Bees Super Shiny Shampoo, Grapefruit %26amp; Sugar Beet ';, this is some AWESOME stuff man!! lol.

Its 98.80% Natural, pH Balanced ( what i now look for in ALL shampoos i use- pH balancing is a good thing ), its Paraben%26amp;Phthalate FREE and its Sodium lauryl/Laureth sulfate FREE=]

( those ingr. are what YOU should watch out for ).

PHTHALATES are used in cosmetics mainly to bind the fragrance oils together. So, when looking at a label, don’t look for ‘phthalates’, look instead for ‘fragrance’. Companies guard this little secret with their lives..this ingridient isnt good for your skin either, it dries it out.

PARABENS are added to soaps and shampoos to act as a preservative. Basically, to give the product a longer shelf life. Their use is widespread and ongoing, due mainly to the fact that they are cheap and have a long history of use. Lately, though, there has been new research that suggests a few problems with using parabens topically. These reports raise the issue that parabens are carcinogens (increasing breast cancer from paraben use in deodorant) and xenoestrogens (an estrogen increaser…obviously a problem if you’re a male).

SODIUM LAURYL/LAURETH SULFATE: Both sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate are able to cause skin irritation and dehydration, In a 2003 study German dermatologists found that after patch testing both sodium laureth and sodium lauryl sulfates increased transepidermal water loss, or dehydration of the skin.

Sodium laureth sulfate has produced “strong evidence” of being “human irritant,” according to Cosmetic Ingredients Review Assessments

So if i were you, id watch out for those 3 Ing. AND only use pH balanced shampoos!!=]

Heres the website for the shampoo i use:
